Wow, what a case! I did quite a bit of research on cases for my new Motorola RAZR HD smart phone before finally purchasing this OtterBox Defender (77-20134) in black. During my research, I went to the OtterBox website as well as YouTube. I found a pretty good YouTube video (for the RAZR version, not the RAZR HD) and figured this case had everything I was looking for, so why not give it a try?I'm fortunate enough to have the use of this phone thru my employer and when it was originally purchased earlier this month, I also received a silicone case and a screen protector, as well as a car charger (all chosen by our IT person). In hindsight, I wish I could have chosen my own accessories because I'm very picky. The case that was originally purchased for me was quite firm and not really that bad, but it was high gloss and showed every single finger print and smudge. Also, the way it fit caused my screen protector to start coming away and bubble at the top. The screen protector also had a blemish that would undoubtedly annoy me to no end.The product description claims this case is triple protection, but I can't decide if it's triple or quadruple. When you unpack it from the box, you need to first remove the holster and put it to the side. Then, remove the outer soft, flexible silicone layer and put it to the side. You're then left with a black plastic case that comes apart when you pry apart the seam on the side where they tell you to. Once the seam is separated, the case comes apart into two pieces(front and back). From this point, all you need to do is make sure your device is immaculate and dust free, make sure the front of the case (built in screen protector!!!) is immaculate and dust free, and then you put the front of your phone into the front portion of the case. Once you've verified that your screen is perfect and up to your cleanliness standards, you can then snap the back of the case on. Step 1 - case is on. At this point, your entire phone is inside the case, protected by a built-in clear screen protector. Once this is done, you should put the soft silicone case back on. This fits perfectly around the black case and just needs to be worked slowly until it's completely on. Step 2 - silicone case is on. The last step, if you choose to use it, is putting the phone into the holster. The phone fits any way you want into the holster. Front side first, back side first, upside down, right side up. Any way works. And the added bonus is that the holster clip actually rotates 360 degrees and LOCKS IN THE OPEN POSITION if you want and can be used as a stand! The You Tube reviewer was confused and thought this part of the case did not function properly, but really it does. If you want your phone to stand up in the "landscape" position, simply lock the holster clip in the open position and then place it on a flat surface. The holster clip opening should be facing UPWARD (in an upright "V" position") in order to get your phone to stand freely in the landscape position. If you want your phone to stand upright in the "portrait" position, it doesn't work as well. It sits at more of a slant than upright, but is still helpful if you want to keep your phone at an angle vs. flat. I would think the landscape position is more desirable, anyway. Step 3 - holster is on.A few things to note:1) There are small silicone "plugs" built into the outer silicone layer that cover the headphone jack on top and the micro USB and HDMI ports on the left. These plugs fit perfectly when you want them to be pushed in and closed and are easy to open when you want to use one of those ports (to plug in headphones, charge your phone or use the HDMI port). These plugs are attached and part of the outer silicone case.2) This part might be a downside to some users, but not me. When you first put your phone into the hard inner case and snap it closed, it's not very easy to get back open. The instructions don't tell you how to get it back open and you'll find that you're hurting your fingers trying to pry it apart. I did need a small, flat head screwdriver and all I did was gently push the flat head into the four (I think) different slots on the sides of the case. I applied a little pressure at an angle and each slot popped open. But, I did need the screwdriver to do it. Someone who needs to get access SIM or memory cards would find this to be an inconvenience but for me, it's no bother. There is no removeable battery on this phone so I'll never need to get inside for that. And the SIM and memory cards are a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. Once the case is on I doubt I will ever be removing it.3) The outer silicone case completely covers the power and volume buttons on the right side, but so far I have not encountered any issues because of this. You might need to press the power button a little harder than normal, but for me this is no problem. All in all, this OtterBox Defender case is really great. I am so happy I bought it. I really thought it might be too costly at first, but now I have no regrets. It's a solid case, screen protector and optional holster all in one. It looks great and I feel that my phone is protected very, very well.If you're looking for an awesome case for your Motorola RAZR HD, look no further. I would buy this again in an instant and strongly recommend it! I will look to OtterBox first in the future for all of my device case needs.
